The Grove Music Festival presents An Evening of Romantic Violin Favorites at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2 at Chapel Lane Presbyterian Church, 5501 Jefferson Ave. Featured artists will be Gabriel Bolkosky, violin and Michele Cooker, piano. Tickets are available at the door for $10. In addition to his solo performance with the Grove, Gabe will be performing with the MPS Honors Strings at Memorial Presbyterian on Nov 1st at 7pm.
Violinist Gabriel Bolkosky will be performing along side native Midland pianist Michele Cooker. Gabe is executive director and founding member of The Phoenix Ensemble. Through this organization and other projects, he has worked with great contemporary composers. In this concert he will be performing the works of Kreisler, Brahms and Debussy.
At the University of Michigan, Gabe studied violin and Paul Kantor and jazz with Elen Rowe and Ed Sarath. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Music in 1995 and his Master’s in 1196. He also studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music under Donald Weilerstein. He maintains a strong interest across many musical genres and regularly performs in both classical and improvised settings.
Over the past decade, Gabe devoted much of his time working with young people. He has worked with thousands of students, teaching violin and improvisation. He has served as guest artist at many workshops and schools around the country including Harvard, Dartmouth, Princeton, the University of Michigan, the Walden School and the Aspen Music Festival, where he played in the Contemporary Ensemble. He began teaching violin at the University of Michigan in 2009.
Raised in Midland, pianist Michele Cooker first studied piano with Margaret Ford and went on to finish a Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance at the University of Michigan. Partner to many distinguished musicians she has performed in many concert series and participated in festivals in the United States, Canada and Mexico. She has appeared on PBS and has recorded numerous programs broadcast live for WFMT radio in Chicago and the CBC in Canada. In addition to performing regularly with Gabe Bolkosky, she collabarates with member of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and numerous violinists through the Midwest. She also teaches piano privately at Kerrytown Concert House.
